Operation: STAREDOWN

This was a fun game with a lot of swing. At the top of turn one Achilles moved up and blasted my missile Ghulam with his panzerfaust. He and the Asura then moved into the panic room without any difficulty.

At the bottom of turn one I had my Khawarij stand up and blast Achilles into unconsciousness. I wasn't able to seize the bunker due to a lack of orders but neutralizing Achilles was a good start.

At the top of turn two the Sophotect repaired Achilles, only to take a wound from the Khawarij in response. She stayed up with No Wound Incapacitation but Achilles was back on the board.

At the bottom of turn two the Khawarij again shoot Achilles into unconsciousness, and then move into the bunker. The lead Khawarij traded shots with the Asura and Penthesilea and managed to kill them both. The Mk 12 wasn't in its best range but the sheer volume of fire combined with the MSV 2 and fireteam bonuses made all the difference.

At the top of turn three we actually did a bit of a rewind. Shamash completely forgot about coordinated orders so we reset to the game state at the top of the turn and allowed him to move his Deva Lt. and her attached flamer-bot, his second Deva with a boarding shotgun, and Atalanta into the bunker. There was a flurry of templates that downed two of the Khawarij.

At the bottom of turn three I managed to score my secondary objective by having Doctor Uzi, M.D., coup de grace the unconscious Sophotect. At this point Shamash was winning by dominating the bunker. I gambled and had the Khawarij with the Mk 12 close to melee with Atalanta, soaking both a boarding shotgun hit and a nanopulser hit, and winning the face-to-face against Atalanta with a timely natural 20 crit.

At this point I could have pushed my luck and tried to kill the Deva Lt. - if I succeeded I would have won, but if I lost a single model in the process then I would have lost. As such I decided to leave it as a draw, ending the game a few minutes early and letting Shamash start a second game with Razors_Edge, who had been patiently waiting in the wings.

Great game full of some wild dice rolls and wild swings in who was winning at any given moment. I've been able to roll over Shamash a few times but now that we're up to 300 points his efficacy has skyrocketed and he made me really work for a draw game.

Amy surveys the battlefield before the game starts.
Combat Group A. The intention was for this to be the primary group that did all the real work.
Combat Group B. The intention was for this to be just an ARO battery, hurling missiles at Achilles or similar targets of high value.
My initial deployment. The Khawarij were all prone to avoid being shot before I got a turn, but also were fairly close to the panic room so they could easily gain access to it. The Ghulam fireteam were in an elevated position so fire missiles through, into, or around the bunker.
My secondary objective. Apparently I was supposed to stab a child? I stabbed a Sophotect instead.
Achilles in the top-center moved up and used his Panzerfaust to kill the missile Ghulams, one at a time, taking my heaviest weapons off the board. At least it used up his Panzerfaust.
This is where things got spicy. Achilles, and the Asura (not pictured), entered the panic room at the bottom of turn one. The Khawarij took a risk, with the Mk 12 MSV 2 model standing up and opening fire on Achilles. It took a few tries but I eventually shot him unconscious. It turns out a full five-strong fireteam of Khawarij are absolutely devastating in the right circumstances - I've had bad luck with them as recently as yesterday but in this instance they really shined. Shone? They really did well.
By turn two Shamash managed to get his Sophotect up to Achilles' unconscious form and got him back on his feet. The Khawarij shot him down *again* while Doctor Uzi, M.D., parachuted in and then shot the Sophotect in the back. Honourable? No. Effective? Yes.
Greg checks in.
The Khawarij close in.
Try as I might I could not get a decent picture of this. The Khawarij with the Mk 12 and MSV 2 breaches the panic room, trading fire with the Asura. I managed to kill the Asura with Mk 12 fire and also didn't die to Penthesilea's AROs.
Look at her, just revving her motorcycle inside. Get outta here, you lout!
This is when things swung back to Shamash. I cleared the bunker and held it at the bottom of turn two. Top of turn three he used coordinated orders to get Atalanta, his Deva Lt. and her attached flamer-bot, and a second Deva into the building. The flamer-bot proceeded to be A Problem.
There was a lot going on over a few turns. Between the heavy flamethrower from the flamer-bot and the nanopulser from the Deva Lt. I lost two of the Khawarij, while Doctor Uzi, M.D., died to combi-rifle shots earlier.
I didn't trust my luck to hold so I broke the fireteam and sent the Khawarij MVP into melee with Atalanta. She missed, the Khawarij soaked the boarding shotgun and nanopulser shot, then rolled a natural 20 on his CC roll and chopped Atalanta thoroughly in half. I *might* have been able to score a win *if* I had been able to kill his Deva Lt. but at this point it was a draw, so we called it there.
