His Will Be Done

"Investigate japanese activity at the Gekidan Research Park."

One phrase from the Jade Emperor. This is all it takes to set the Imperial Service machinery into motion. As usual, no precision or hints at what we're supposed to be looking for. What the Celestial One expects is nothing short of perfection: the report must be thorough, period. If He wants to know, everything that can be known will be brought to him, for it is not up to us, His humble servants, to decide what is of interest or what is superfluous.

Ironically, for an Imperial Agent those orders are the epitome of freedom, an unique occasion to show what one can do when the usually necessary schackles of Yu-jing monolithic bureaucracy are let loose. It is also a test of our abilities, so I must plan carefully. Failure would incur the Emperor's wrath, and more than one overly ambitious Imperial Agent has seen its career end this way.

The plan I came up with was the following: A thorough inspection of the facility before the Combined Army overrun the place was nigh impossible, especially considering we'd first have to wrestle control of it from the japanese treacherous hands.
However, given that the current crisis had transformed the formerly peacefull peninsula into a full blown war zone, numbers of scientist and civilian were stuck in the research lab and would most likely sell many secrets and informations to get ouf of here safely.
Ninjas and Kanren were infiltrated into the research lab and, recouping their recon info with previous dossiers, one key target for exfilatrion and interrogation was identified: Pr.Kubo Junko, formerly a big part of the Karakuri Project and one of Japan's best artificial intelligence expert. She seemed overly eager to accept our offer, which makes me think she might be fleeing more than the alien onslaught. We also organized the exfiltration of 2 lesser targets, a low-rank kuge actionnary and an investigation journalist, mostly as decoy to hide our real target.
Our infiltrators had also spotted a few panoceanian scientists working on site, including a certain Pr.Gunn, suspected to be an Hexahedron asset. It was decided we'd take those out as well if given the opportunity, for good measure.

Usually, the absurd quantity of paperwork required to set-up such an operation would've delayed it by weeks, if not months. Thanks to the executive order, only 4 days had passed between the Emperor formulating his request, and our commando making its way under night's cover through the Emerald jungle to the research park.

We reached the lab at dawn and, much for our surprise, were met with a similar commando of the Ikari Company. They had rounded up our would-be escapees, and were also trying to exfiltrate some Panoceanian scientists. It was pretty clear we'd have to deal with them if we were to pursue our objective, so we took position and prepared for the firefight.

Gekidan Research Lab, a jewel of knowledge lost in the Durgama's green hell.

Jīnshān Task Force’s Imperial Service Division

A zhanying squad led by myself, Colonel Bai Yang of the Hsien Warriors, and loyalist ninja asset.
An aleph support squad made of 2 dakinis and a sophotect supervised by my 2nd in command, Imperial Agent Pheasant Rank Duàn Liling.
A group of kuang-shi and some mechanized reinforcement: A Husong Yaokong escort remote and a Pangulling equipped with an EVO hacking device.

The Ikari Company Banzaï Commando

A tanko squad led by a daokai, a support brawler and druze squad, a traitor ninja, 2 desperados, a Rui-shi remote, an EVO hacker Pangulling and a Triphammer TAG.

All forces involved take position

The brawler squad takes Ikari's right flank, with a desperados and the ninja tagging along. The rui-shi, the tripphammer and the other desperados take the left one. The samouraï squad takes the middle of the board and assume a defensive position, covering the objectives and ready to move where needed.
On ISS right flank we find the whole Aleph Support squad, as well as 2 kuang-shi and the EVO remote on top of the tower to maximize connectivity!
ISS's left flank is left to yours truly, Colonel Bai Yang and his zhanying. Our ninja is deployed ahead, hinding the stair's shadow, and we're covered by the 2 remaining kuang-shi and the escort Yaokong.

The Ikari Company takes Initiative, and charges into battle!

Using the smoke cover provided by a desperado, Ikari's ninja escapes deadly fire from our Dakini sniper, and uses a console....
... to succesfully identify our main target, Pr.Kubo Junko!
However it is well protected, so the mercenaries move on to a more aggressive strategy. The Tripphammer makes its way through the left flank, ready to deal crippling damage to the Imperial Service.
On its way toward destruction, he takes a few seconds to turn one of our decoy into red mist. The investigation journalist stood no chance!
However, the only destruction the TAG provoked was his own, and a few well aimed shots from our dakini's HMG, as well as shrapnells from our kuang-shi, were enough to send the janky war machine to the scrapeyard it should've never left, and turn the tide of battle!

The Dragon's wrath unleash! Colonel Bai Yang jumps into action!

I know a winning move when I see one, and the TAG's early destruction was a crippling blow to Ikari's forces. Determined to keep this momentum, I led my zhanyings forwards on the left flank, killed a desperado and incapacited the rui-shi, then reclaimed a console...
... and successfully identified Pr.Gunn hiding location! Still suspicious of her real identity, I decided to handle her fate personally. Having witnessed her expertly dodges three full burst of my marksman rifle, it is obvious that my doubts were founded: this is no mere civilian!
Not even awaiting orders, our own ninja made its way toward his "colleague" location. No doubt they have some grudges to settle!
While quantronic duel are less impressive than steel and sword ones, they are no less effective, and our ninja got rid of his brethren in the cold, calculated way of professionnal assassins.
Meanwhile, my trusty 2nd in command led her remotes toward the middle of the board and engaged the samouraï, grazing the missile launcher's wielding tanko...
...before assuming a more defensive position to cover my flank from a potential samouraï attack.

Ikari on the backfoot! Can the samouraï lead a successful counter-attack?

Desperate situations call for desperate measure, and one by one the remains of Ikari's right flank jumped into crossfire to try and take me down to save the hopeless Pr.gunn!.
But no can do. The desperados and brawler sniper meet their fate at the hand of our escort remote, while I challenged the brawler lieutenant and druze. After a short but intense firefight, they managed to graze my shoulder and forced me to assume a safer position.
Our dakini sniper held off the samouraï for a while, but was ultimately brough down by the dayokai...
... who then proceeded to flank my zhanying followers, and kill the hacker before he could react.

Relentless in its pursuit, it's time for ISS to deal the coup de grâce.

Dispatching the remains of Ikari's right flank was a mere formality, and Imperial Judgement was finally brough down on Pr. Gunn. Her fate was inevitable!
I personnaly moved on to our objective. None of our target should be left alive!

Epilogue: Die with honor, or die trying.

Left leaderless, the samouraï threw their lives on the line to try and save the remaining Pano scientist. How foolish. How could they stand a chance against the might of the Empire? When the dust settled, there was no one left alive on Ikari's side to tell the story of their "heroic" sacrifice.

As I was making my way back to my forces, I noticed our sophotect ally inspecting the remains of the tripphammer TAG.

I hailed her: "Did you find anything of interest?"

"Not much", she replied with the monotonous, emotionless voice of Aleph's assets when the public wasn't involved. "The dakini's shots hitted a weakspot, pierced the armor and killed the pilot straight. then the kuang-shi's shrapnels touched an exposed canister, which provoked the explosion. All systems are fried... and the pilot as well". The scent of charred flesh became more persistent as she spoke those words. "Anything else, Colonel?"

"No, that'll be all. Load your remotes on the baggage, we're leaving ASAP". She nodded, and went to proceed as ordered.

Of course, it wasn't all. Why would an aleph puppet take interest into a janky mining TAG?

Having witnessed our exchange, Duàn Liling approached me. She looked at the burning war machine.

"And the marksmanship programm wasn't even online yet. I guess even machines get lucky once in a while, right?"

I stood silent for a few seconds, remembering former encounters with combat remotes, foes and allies alike.

"No" I concluded. "They don't".

Nothing to add, we joined with our troops and exfiltrees and moved toward the jungle.

I remembered reports that Aleph forces in the region seemed to have taken a special interest in this lab.

What's Aleph's game here? I'm sure Pr.Kubo Junko knows the answer.
