Silhouettes and Sparks Play

Hsien Lt. Casey Shu motions his elite squad of Yu Jing operatives to take up position just outside the comms room, located in the Raveneye Bow Section. Since the Pan-O forces appear to be in retreat, or at least nowhere in sight, that leaves the Imperial Service and Invincibles to clean up for those religious zealots yet again.
“This is it,” Lt. Casey whispers, “the comms center should be just on the other side of this door.”
“Let me take point. We are Invincible!” private Wang, wearing a Yan Huo Inviniclbes heavy suit, demands.
Casey only wishes they all could see his eyes roll, but Dr. Xu mirrors the Lt. while her trusty Yaozao covers its eyes with its hands. “Listen up, especially you, Wang. Right now, we have the element of surprise. If any of you blow that, I’ll make sure to make that quite clear in my report to high command.”
Mech-Engineer Lam rests his hand upon the crest of the Pangguling drone they have along for support and nods his assent, along with the rest of the small squad.
“We’ve only made it this deep into Raveneye undiscovered because of our small numbers and careful movement,” Casey continues.
“And no thanks to you, Wang,” Dr. Xu attempts to shove the heavy armored private in the arm, to little avail.
“So here’s the plan: we’ve had reports of heavy Shasvastii activity in this area. So no matter what we see when we open that door, I want you all prepared for engagement with the enemy. Those sneaky aliens can blend into just about any environ. So even if there’s no clear signs of alien activity, be prepared for action. Do I make myself clear?”
The entire squad joins in on the affirmative. “And Wang?”
The Yan Huo Invincible looks down into Lt. Casey’s glowing helmet eyes.
“I want you to immediately seize any high ground in this room, regardless of the sitrep.”

Moments later, the door silently slides open to reveal the embers of a firefight. Pan-O heavy armor suits and officers lay motionless near Shasvastii and Morat remains. The smoldering wreckage of various computer equipment sends sparks and smoke into the atmosphere. Beyond the occasional electrical noise, the comms room is all but silent, or nearly so. The occasional thud, deliberate, but hesitant–not quite reminiscent of the footfalls of a human–can be heard from the shadows of the far side of the room.
The Yu Jing team doesn’t await further orders, but moves quietly into position. The Dr. and Mech Engineer slide into cover behind electronic bulwarks, while Wang begins a cautious ascent up some stairs to an elevated gangway that overlooks the entire room. Hsien Casey crouchs behind a smoldering UTV nearby. What it was doing here, he hasn’t a clue. Then he motions the Pangguling drone forward. As it steps out into the open, it begins to scan for any active consoles or movement and sends the data instantaneously to the Engineer Lam. He signals towards a computer terminal near the center of the room, then two smaller antennas closer to the walls, nearby.
The intermittent thuds continue from the darkness that engulfs the other end of the room. Then through the occasional sparks, like little balls of lightning attracted to some slow moving object, the massive silhouette of an alien monstrosity flickers in and out of vision.
Hsien switches on his multispectral visor, and the beast shimmers into reality: a towering hulk, crisscrossed with iridescent thick plate, with two hook-like structures protruding from its back and up over its head. This TAG, codenamed Xeodron, lumbers once more forward, towards the center of the room. And then, though it has given no intimation that it has noticed anything alarming, suddenly the Xeodron leaps up onto the gangway, directly across from Wang’s position, and its alien weaponry begins to glow eerily.
“Contacts!” shouts Lt. Casey, but the firefight is already well underway.
Say what you will about Wang, that Yan Huo knows how to pull the trigger. He opens up with a full burst directed at the Xeodron the second the beast’s hooved feet touch down. The hulking TAG attempts to fire back but is knocked off balance as magnetic cannon rounds puncture his plate armor.
Just then, a missile flies from the shadows, and Wang ducks swiftly sideways. As the explosion lights up the room from behind him, Wang zeros in upon a strange gray skinned mechanoid holding a glowing, but empty, missile launcher. This Unidron staggers and falls to the ground, its largely mechanical body bleeding electrical interference.
A spider-like automonton surges forward next to the Xeodron upon the gangway, each staccato step producing a clank that reverberates throughout the room. The flash of a pulse emerges from the barrel mounted upon its torso, and for a moment, Hsien Lt. Casey is blinded. In the mere milliseconds it takes him to switch from MSV to normal view, more rounds ring out from Wang’s position, peppering the hulk and drone both opposite him. Two resounding thuds follow. When Lt. Casey peers around the UTV’s frame, he sees that both the Xeodron and the R-Drone have been disabled.
This is his opportunity. He can hear the alien leader shouting commands, likely demanding his troops fall back to cover. Lt. Casey bursts into action, covering ground at astonishing speed. He blinks his MSV back on, and from the cover of a tall electronical console, he glimpses an alien being that could only be one of the dreaded Umbra Samaritans. Knowing these predators are not to be underestimated, he slides into nearby cover and opens up with his heavy machine gun. The creature leaps into the air, in evasion, and as it does so, the shadow behind the console almost seems to cling to it. But Lt. Casey is too fast, and he swings his HMG to track the elegant curve of its flight.
The creature’s limp body slumps down upon the wreckage of a communications console, and the room goes silent again except for the occasional sparks.

“What the hell was that?” Wang calls from his elevated position, still scanning the room for movement.
“An Umbra,” shouts Dr. Xu, and a hint of disgust and awe seeps into her voice.
“Let’s get a scan, Lam,” Casey commands, as he gets back to his feet, glancing back towards the Mech-Engineer.
The second the Pangguling drone signals all clear, Wang’s heavy boots slam down into the comms room’s floor, leaving an imprint proportionate to his massive frame. He laughs, as the doctor glares at him from nearby.
“Let’s see what we can dig up from what remains of these computers, team,” Lt. Casey says, taking up position at the center console, next to the doctor.
“I wonder what these Onyx negotiators were after here anyway,” ponders Lam, as he plugs the Pangguling into an antenna port.

And as the Yu Jing team begins collecting data, no one notices the Med-Tech unit, codenamed Obsidon Medchanoid, as it and its two slave drones slither throughout the shadows, slinking the alien bodies of their fallen comrades back into the darkness that isolates the far side of the comms room from their vision. Will this Onyx team rise again? Only the worm-like doctor can truly conceive of the odds. But, after all, he was designed for this specific task. Is that a slight gleam in his eyes, or just the reflection off a sparking console nearby?

Play-by-Play

Casey wins roll off, and takes Initiative.
Havlok picks a side and has Casey deploy first.

Casey Turn 1
Order 1
Casey opens up with Yan Huo HMC, puts two wounds on Xeodron
Takes Unidron unconscious. Return fire all misses.
Order 2
Xeodron tanks 3 shots from Yan Huo.
R-drone bites the dust.
Order 3
Yan Huo unloads on Xeodron, takes him unconscious.
Lt. Order
Hsien moves to the side of Hummer/UTV, takes a shot at Nourkias (Lt. Havlok), who dodges unsuccessfully. Nourkias falls unconscious.
Order 4
Hsien moves up to center console and takes a slave drone unconscious.
Order 5
Hsien moves to antannea, takes shot at other slave drone who dodges successfully.
This leaves only Dr. Worm left on the CA side. Clearly Havlok poorly deployed, thinking his K1 Xeodron, R-Drone, and Missile launcher Unidron could handle the Yan Huo in Reaction. Poor decisions all around.

Havlok turn 1
Order 1
Medtech climbs on roof near Xeodron.
Yan Huo takes a pot shot, but Dr. Worm crit dodges prone into b2b with unconscious Xeodron.

Casey Turn 2
Order 1
Casey sends his helper drone to cap the left antenna, successfully.
Order 2
Dr. walks toward other antenna.
Order 3
Dr. gets to other antenna, caps it.
Order 4
Flash drone walks into b2b with center console.
Lt order
Hsien moves to side of building with Dr worm on it.
Order 5
Hsien climbs building, shoots Dr. Worm point blank, taking him out, winning the game.

Casey has 2 antenna and the center console at the end of the game.
9 to 0, Casey Yu Jing wins!

Some Pics: Sorry we're new, so we clearly need to get painting.

My son and I are very new to Infinity. I've been playing very rarely since near the end of N3. We have both played a few games of Code One, but honestly, this was our first attempt at full N4. Clearly, I made some mistakes during deployment, underestimating that HMC. I'm not sure why, since I've used it to great effect in the past and seen my son use it against me in Code One games. Haha! Anyway, loving the campaign. And it's so cool to be able to share our games with you all. Hope you enjoy!
