Growing Casualties

A first glimpse at the entrance to the Max-Sec Vault, caught by a Haqqislamite Spy Drone

Intro
There was a tension in the air that only a keen mind could grasp. It joined the humidity and silence that reigned the inside of the Biodome, weighing down heavily on the members of Division Firebird's second team as they stealthily moved through the trees under a grey concrete sky. A Dronbot, its armor plates and legs of a greenish tint, lead on, its sensors ever searching for hostile movement. The rest of the troop, hands clutching their weapons, followed closely after the remote. Sagara, the Ex-Naga Sniper that had found her refuge from Aleph in working for Division Firebird and its notorious Commander, trailed them a dozen meters behind and kept her enhanced eyes on their surroundings. Somewhere in front of them, hidden in the mist-covered distance, lay the great elevator that lead to the surface. Their only way out.
Suddenly, a flaring of lights cut through the fog and shrubbery, drenching the area in artificial daylight. It was accompanied by a loud, unnatural voice that carried its message over to the hiding team:
"ALERT! ALERT! Contamination Breach in Biodome-2. Intruders identified as Druze Bayram Security. Area scans indicate introduction of alien bacteria and other foreign bodies in the closed biotope. Xeno life forms contaminated for research purposes. Expected results irretrievably contaminated. Restart of research operation is prepared, Biodome-2 is cleaned of organisms. Decontamination protocol initiated. Persons advised to proceed to designated shelters and associated lifts to avoid total annihilation. ALERT! ALERT!"
The message began to repeat itself and there was a visible confusion on the mercenaries' faces. One of the Brawlers cried out:
"Fuck, what?! What does that mean?!"
Behind him, Sagara went into a sprint as she called to them:
"It means our time has run out. Move now, or die!"

Darpan is the place to be this campaign, and this time my opponent and me even decided to play the official mission for that location: Panic Room!
For this mission I've handpicked all those units that carry a template weapon, the plan was to give Inititative to my opponent and then to have the Diggers and Fiddler's Jackbots clear the Room in my turn. This mission is especially difficult with DBS, as they only have their characters to count as essential personnel, while Aleph has cheap but durable Devas for that. Let the match begin!

An overview of the battlefield with the Panic Room in the center.

Turn 1 - Aleph
My opponent started with his bounty hunters moving up on the right flank of the map, testing their luck against a long range ARO by one of my brawlers, and one of them died to a lucky shot. Next up was an Asura that lead a Haris-Team of Yadu Troopers and engaged in a firefight with my Sierra Dronbot. Her Spitfire and high BS surprisignly were not enough to overcome it. 3 AROs meant 12 dice rolls by the Sierra Dronbot, and I managed to roll 3 crits in the process without losing a single face-to-face roll, taking the Asura out. Good job, Critbot, not too bad for a start! One of the Yadus replaced her though and took revenge on Critbot, killing it and an unlucky Digger with an HRL. The turn ended with my opponent moving a Deva with a Spitfire into a forward position and activating Suppresive Fire Mode and also entering the Panic Room with a Deva+Devabot and the remaining Bounty Hunter.

Turn 1 - DBS
The only real way to start your first turn with DBS is to call in your Yuan Yuan. Aiming to get into my opponents backline and strip him of his cheap orders, I rolled for Combat Jump, but failed. Alright, forget that useless Pirate, there were other tasks I had to complete. Every movement by my troops was watched by either the Yadu or the Deva, so I had no other chance than to try and take them out. My Triphammer (portrayed by an Anaconda) advanced through cover to attack the Yadu, but couldnt quite finish its job and taking a wound in return. On the other flank, I activated my 5-man Fireteam and attacked the Deva with Arslan, but again only wounded her, unable to get the kill. Now that was problematic, REALLY problematic because I had no other chance than to try and advance with my other units if I wanted to have any chance at getting into the Panic Room. My turn ended with a Digger moving through the Deva's suppressive fire and into the Panic Room, killing the Devabot and wounding its owner, but dying in the process.

Turn 2 - Aleph
With her Impetous Order, the Bounty Hunter left the Panic Room towards my troops, managing to catch both Chief Arslan and Fiddler, whom I had moved out of my Deployment Zone but haven't had enough Orders to move further, under her Chain Colt (+1B). Arslan survived, but Fiddler unfortunately didn't, failing both armor saves. The Yadu sprang into action once again and traded blows with my Triphammer, which fell after several Orders of mindlessly shooting each other from a few metres distance. The 2 Yadu that now formed a Duo-Team now moved into the Panic Room unhindered, peeking out of the doors to attack my Core-Fireteam. I managed to take out one of them, but lost 2 members, one of them being Arslan, who also was my Lieutenant! Oh, no...

Turn 2 - DBS
With the Biotechvore Plague in their back, and overwhelming firepower in front of them, my remaining troops were in a pickle and there was no real way out of it. Aida Swanson, who had rolled a Multi Rifle on her Booty Roll earlier, tried to take on the Deva that still watched the left side of the Panic Room, but died. A desperate attempt of my Monstrucker, who only had a Submachine Gun, finally succeeded, though I knew it was way too late now. I activated Sagara (which goes by Armand Le Muet in my Army List) to move her towards the Panic Room, which ended my turn.

Turn 3 - Aleph
My opponent had a second Deva+Devabot that he now activated, closing the distance between them and Sagara easily thanks to the cover the table provided. The Devabot sacrificed itself to Sagara's Nanopulser but succeeded at taking her out, too. With almost all of my troops unconscious, the last Orders of Aleph were spent moving more forces into the Panic Room.

Turn 3 - DBS
I had only 2 Regular Orders in my turn, so there is not much left to tell. My Brawler Hacker went on a stroll to check out the beautiful building that was the Panic Room, but didn't dare to peek inside. The match ended with me wetting my shirt as I stealthily tried to wipe the tears from my eyes before my opponent could see them. Guess I even failed that roll! Q_Q

Aleph: 9 pts
DBS: 1 pt

Critbot was pretty much the only positive thing about this match for me. I was kind of overwhelmed by the mission forcing the player to both have all your minis advance due to the Biotechvore but also have spare orders to clear and conquer the Panic Room. The result was that most of my troops ended up standing somewhere in between, being cannon fodder for my opponent. I'm sure I could do better with that experience in mind, but my opponent and me never liked these kind of missions anyway and will most likely not play it again.

Outro
Sagara lay in the grass as she woke from unconsciousness, her hair and clothing burned and her whole body in pain. The sounds of gunfire had faded, and she realized that the fight was over. There was movement in front of her, but any attempt to lift her head and take a look failed, her body denying any control over its muscles. A voice, charming, but in this situation all the more frightening, began to speak to her.
"What do we have here? I'd say that we've almost forgotten about you, but as you of course know, sister, Aleph never forgets."
An aggressive hiss escaped Sagara's lips, her burned vocal chords unable to form the words she wanted to say. The voice chuckled.
"You crave release, but I'm afraid we can't grant you that. Aleph is responsible for the security of all, a security that is endangered by strays like you. Your termination is imminent, but first, let's take a look at what's inside your head. The memories of your life alongside those mercenaries will prove to be beneficial for us. After all, information is everything."
The voice paused, but there was a sound of shifting movement right next to Sagara which she couldn't ascertain. Then something hit her head, and the world went dark once more.
