Prologue: Back to Zebu

“Welcome back Gold!” Lt. Slater called over the sounds of gunfire, “You almost missed all the fun.”

Lieutant Gold dashed up to the wall Lt. Slater and the rest of his fireteam were sheltered behind. The flight back to Zebu had been a lot bumpier than his journey to Darpan; the fighting across Durgama had escalated quickly. He had arrived at Zebu in the middle of a firefight and had quickly found the remnants of the Raveneye Strikeforce.

“Just you?” Lt. Slater asked.

“Izzy stayed behind with Ensign Cho to assist with some data acquisition” Lt. Gold replied, his head dropped “Major Collins was severely injured while engaging an EI Aspect. He has been sent for medical treatment…the medical team said they were optimistic that he would live”.

Lieutenant Slater looked down somberly, “He’s a one, if anyone can pull through, he will”.

“If Sarge could get back up after facing a Sphinx I’m sure the Major will be back”, Prv. Reynolds joked.

Sergeant Sharpe laughed in agreement as he fired over the wall with his sniper rifle at some enemies in the distance. Gold looked around taking in the situation. The remains of the Raveneye Strikeforce were stretched along a defensive line, facing off against a similarly entrenched enemy. As he saw Sgt. Blaise who nodded at him in acknowledgement. Nearby another member of the Epsilon Corp was bracing his weapon against a wall and firing through a cloud of smoke thrown by Aella. Gold’s heads-up display identified the Epsilon as Cpt Joey Bing. Nearby Casanova was casually leaning against a wall, seemingly speaking to someone over private comms.

As Gold took everything in he was suddenly taken aback by the site of a living legend, Hector. Gold could hardly believe that Hector himself was here. As he watched, the resurrected Trojan gestured around the field, smiling and speaking into the Vid-drone of a Warcor. As he watched Gold caught sight of a nearby Betatrooper, standing guard as well as the Aristeia star Pavarti.

“What is Hector doing here, has he taken over command?” Lt. Gold asked Lt. Slater.

Lieutenant Slater laughed, “Don’t worry, I’m still in charge. That’s not the Hector you think it is”. Lt. Gold looked at Lt. Slater puzzled. “It’s Specialist Yiu”, Slater whispered, “they are recording a press video to help motivate the citizens of Concilium Prima. It’s not really dishonest, the real Hector is in Durgama fighting, just not here specifically”.

“So, what is the situation here?” Gold asked.

“Well after the sneaky approach failed it seems that the enemy decided to take a more direct approach. From what we’ve been able to determine we are facing an ‘Onyx Contact Force’. But hey, atleast it isn’t mora…”

Waaah! – Waaah! – Waaah!

An emergency alert siren began sounding through the station cutting off Lt. Slater. Alert messaged flashed across Lt. Gold’s display, “NANOVIRAL CONTAINMENT BREACH – EMERGENCY NULL ZONE ACTIVATED”

As Gold looked around, he saw a growing cloud of nanovirus spreading towards their position. The specially designed nanite swarm was on the station to be used in the controlled destruction of failed experiment or in the case of symbiote containment breaches. Unfortunately, the fighting had led to the nanovirus itself escaping containment.

Ahead he could see the illuminated emergency signs denotating the emergency null zones, special safe zones set-up to protect staff in case of an accidental release of the nanovirus.

“Okay squad!” Lt. Slater’s voice boomed over comms, “Time to move!” The squad’s displays lit up with the safe zone highlighted. “Hold your breath, keep your eyes peeled! We aren’t the only one that will be looking to escape the cloud”.

Lieutenant Gold braced himself and prepared to advance. Lt. Slater was right, they may be fleeing the grasp of the cloud, but in doing so they were running right into the arms of the enemy.

Chapter 1.1 – Out of the frying pan…

Moving in synchronized unit Lts Slater and Gold, and the three Kappas began to advance towards the null-zone. Lt. Slater highlighted a defensive structure within the safe zone, and directed the squad to take up defensive positions within.

Just as the team began to enter the building an alert appeared from Sgt. Blaise, “Pinned down by enemy sniper, requesting long range assistance”.

Seamlessly Sgt. Sharpe changed direction and moved to the corner of the building. Following the data relayed from Sgt. Blaise, Sgt. Sharpe located the enemy sniper. He fired off shots and watched as the impacted the remote, throwing it back. Just as he turned to leave he caught the bot stand back-up and return to its firing position.

“How is that thing still up?!” Sgt. Sharpe questioned in shock.

Two DA Sniper rounds to the chest and the Unidron is still up and Dogged.

“Nice try kid, I got this” Cpt Bing said over comms.

As the Epsilon moved to engage, Sgt. Sharpe realized that the Epsilon had made a mistake. He watched as balls of plasma came streaking from the Combined Army position and slammed into the Epsilon. Cpt. Bing was thrown back and crumpled to the floor.

“Don’t worry, I brought the good stuff” Pavarti chimed over comms. “While I deal with him why don’t you clear our way”.

Pavarti with a +3 to Doctor? Yes Please!

Sgt. Sharpe nodded, took a breath and aimed back around the corner. This time the Unidron was prepared and leveled it’s gun at Sharpe. Bullets and plasma streaked across the field. The Unidron’s shots slammed into the corner of the building Sharpe was using as cover, showering the Kappa in debris. Just as Sharpe was taking cover from the falling debris he saw his shots hit home, as the enemy exploded into pieces.

“Enemy sniper eliminated; you are clear to advance”

With the all clear given the rest of the strikeforce advanced from their positions. ‘Hector’ and his Betatrooper guard advanced along the roof top, while Pavarti and the revived Bing advanced along the ground. Meanwhile, the Prvs Reynold and Filion, already secure in the null-zone directed the Oko and Kytta on the right flank to advance, providing repeater coverage over the null-zone.

“Report in! Has everyone reached the null-zone?” Lt. Slater questioned over comms.

One by one the strikeforce called in confirming that they had reached safety. Lt. Slater sighed in relief.
“Wait!” Lt. Gold said jumping up, “The Warcor!”

Lt. Gold ran to the window and looked back to where he had last seen the Warcor. There he was, filming the ‘Brave advance of Hector and his forces’, seemingly unaware of the danger he was in. As Gold watched the Warcor began to twitch and spasm as the nanovirus began to take hold, with a scream the journalist fell to the floor as his flesh began to melt away…

Chapter 1.2 – …and into the fire

Hector Yiu watched as Betatrooper 1138 scanned the enemy deployment zone for enemy movements. Having the remote acting as his bodyguard made him feel much safer despite the shitshow that this op had become.

“CONTACT identified – 1 o’clock” 1138, reported.

Gunfire erupted from the remote’s spitfire, in the direction of the enemy. Hector watched as bullets slammed into the heavily armoured remote. As the smoke cleared Hector looked on in fear as 1138 slumped to the ground, disabled.

“Umm Pavarti, 1138 is going to need some repairs”.

Chappy down!

Sergeant Blaise listened as Rappy reported signs of the enemy advancing on the other side of the research lab it was hiding behind.

- thud – thud –

Suddenly Blaise’s quadronic defences lit up as his system linked to the enemy through the repeaters that had just landed. Blaise sensed an alien presence trying to hack his system and began to fight back. Suddenly the pressure from the enemy hacker waned.

“I got you buddy” Hector Yiu’s voice crackled through the comms. The Tian Gou had dropped his holographic disguise and was trying fight back against the enemy through their repeater. Specialist Yiu had bought Blaise a reprieve, but not for long. As the pressure intensified once again on Blaise, he knew that Yiu was dead. Slowly but surely the enemy hacker began to overcome the Raptor’s defences, ravaging his mind. But the fight was taking time, and as it raged on the nanovirus grew ever closer to the enemy, who had yet to reach the safety of the null-zone. When the pressure stopped it was clear to Blaise that the enemy had realized this too.

Blaise tried to reverse hack the enemy as they approached, but his mind was too weakened from the assault on his systems and he couldn’t breach the enemies defences. To his left he heard Sgt. Sharpe scream in pain as a super-heated ball of plasma slammed into him vaporizing his arm and leaving him sprawled along the floor. He heard the crack of Cpt. Bing’s HMG as the head of an Unidron wildly dashing away from the swarm exploded.

Chapter 2.1 – You’re trapped in here with us

Captain Bing darted to the edge of the lab as Aveto’s smoke grenade exploded covering the area in a thick cloud. As Cpt. Bing looked around the corner he spotted the enemy Q-Drone attempting to scan for targets. How the bot had survived the nanovirus he didn’t know, but it would not survive him. As bullets exploded out of the smoke the dronebot tried to dodge to avoid the shots, but it was too slow and the rounds ripped it apart.

“Q-Drone down, Pavarti you are clear to repair 1138”

Beep – beep – beep

A warning chimed over Cpt Bing’s headset, notifying him that an enemy had placed a target lock on his signature. “Watch-out, enemy hacker in play!”

“I see it! Can someone clear this damn repeater so I can deal with it?”, Blaise said.

“On it” Pavarti said as she dashed from cover unloading her SMGs into the enemy repeaters.

As the repeater sizzled and cracked Blaise felt the enemy network disconnect. “My turn!”

Hacking through the Oko’s repeater Blaise quickly dispatched the enemy hacker that had been hiding in the null-zone. Then he set his mind to dealing with the hacker that had assaulted his systems. According to Rappy the hacker and it’s squad were hiding just on the other side of the lab wall, and Blaise knew just how to deal with them.

With a quick command Rappy and Blaise surged forward. As Rappy darted around the wall and stared down the enemies clustered against the wall Blaise moved forward into Rappy’s former position.

Startled by the Rappy’s sudden appearance the enemies did the best to dodge the sudden gout of flame erupting from the bot’s arm. As two of the enemies burned to death, Blaise unleashed a violent torrent of hacking attacks at the enemy hacker who had just barely avoided the flames. As the enemy’s brain was fried by the assault Blaise sighed in relief. Aside from a single bot tangling with Rappy the enemy had been cleared from the field.

Hard choices for Kerr-Nau

As Blaise reported back that the enemy had been all but defeated Captain Bing moved up the field. He had noticed what seemed to be a nomad agent and wanted to investigate further. As he approached he noted that the target’s body had not quite reached the null-zone and was being ravaged by the nanovirus.

When he scanned the remains he made two discoveries. First, the target was wearing Nomad equipment and appeared to be a Nomad agent, Secondly, the target was a Shasvastii impersonator. Captain Bing logged the information to be sent to high command. Hopefully this Shasvastii had merely donned the guise of a nomad to try and sow confusion at Zebu, but this could indicate a larger infiltration of the Nomad operations at Durgama.

Captain Bing scaled the nearby lab and set himself in a defensive position overlooking where the enemy had come from. Behind him Betatrooper 1138 stood as sentry, having been repaired by Pavarti. The remote suddenly let out an alert, and Bing quickly saw why, a large shimmering blur was streaking towards them…

Chapter 2.2 – An Old Enemy

As the blur neared the shimmer intensified and then resided leaving behind an old enemy, a Sphinx. The enemy TAG shot wildly spraying bullets at Captain Bing and 1138. 1138 quickly hit the ground avoiding the shots, while Bing was knocked down by the force of a bullet hitting him in the chest. Lucky for the Epsilon the extra biotechnical shielding he had installed before the fight absorbed the impact of the shot leaving him unscathed.

“Can someone shut that thing down?”

Chapter 3.1 – Beware the Cornered Wolf

Private Reynolds directed the Oko along the right side of the lab it was hiding behind, bringing its repeater into range of the enemy TAG. Once in range Reynolds and Filion began probing the enemy system, sending targeted hacks at it look to immobilize and isolate the TAG. The TAGs locomotive systems held, but after a concerted assault the Kappas were able to isolate the TAG from the enemy’s network.

“Sir, we haven’t been able to shut the enemy down, but we have cut it off from the enemy network”.

“That will have to do for now” Lt. Slater replied, “But keep at it, I don’t want to be stuck in here with an angry Sphinx”.

[Another Sphinx, really?] Sgt. Blaise thought to himself as he moved to finish of the last remaining Unidron. He felt bad that he would be doing this again as he aimed his gun at the two bots engaged with one another. He unloaded into the melee, bullets slamming into the Unidron and Rappy. To Blaise’s surprise the Unidron’s armour held while Rappy fell to the ground motionless. This he could not abide.

Blaise rushed forward recklessly, firing at the Unidron as he went. Emotionlessly the bot turned to face the Raptor and fired. The ball of plasma slammed into the Raptor slamming him into the wall of the nearby lab.

"You got cocky kid" - Colonel Harrison Solo, to Sgt Blaise while he recovered after the battle

Miles away at the Beta Corp’s secure facility notice of Sgt. Blaise’s vitals dropping of flashed across Lucas George’s, the operator of 1138, display. [Time to get to work], he thought, as he directed the 1138 to dodge down the side of the building it was hiding on.

Back at Zebu, the Betatrooper suddenly jumped up and over the side of the lab, sprinting down the side. Before the Unidron could react the 1138 unloaded its spitfire into the bot, tearing it apart. Now all that was left was the Sphinx.

Chapter 3.2 – A fine addition

The Sphinx lurched into action, darting away from the enemy repeater. Despite being isolated from the network it knew that the day was lost. Perhaps something could be salvaged from this operation if it could just grab Kerr-Nau and ferry him to safety.

With supernatural speed the Sphinx sped away, as it ran it felt it’s servos seizing, slowing the TAG until it stood frozen in place.

“Good work boys” Lt. Slater said clapping the Kappas on their shoulders, “Looks like you caught yourselves a big one!”

Epilogue: Breach Contained

As the nanovirus dissipated, Pavarti and the Kappas worked to load up the Sphinx for transport to a secure facility, ensuring that it could not reconnect to the Combined Army’s network, or move. Lt. Gold took a deep breath in. This campaign was definitely full of surprises, and he really did not look forward to what it threw at him next. As he stood taking a breath he saw Casanova stand up from where he had been leaning against the wall.

The agent smiled at Gold, and nodded, “My job here is done”, Casanova stated mater of factly.

‘But you didn’t do anything” Gold stammered, confused by the Agent’s comment.

Casanova’s only response was a small laugh. He gave a flip of his cape and began walking away towards a nearby shuttle.
