The Foreign Company had seen a lot of work recently. Battles on Durgama were a bit outside of the normal scope of mercenary work. Full scale action by the powers and the Combined Army didn’t leave much room for Hexadome stars used to the spotlight. But they had been recruited and seconded to the Durgama Defense Force, and that meant that they went wherever needed. Haqqislamite silk paid the bills, but today they were fighting for Yu Jing’s interests. Either way, money was money.

Sent to attack a PanOceanian AC2, Valkyrie insisted in coming along. She was best equipped for this job, it was true. A Bolt sniper was also brought, and PanOceanian remotes, with the hope that it might delay their opponents just enough to get the first blows in if it came to a fight. And it would. A dull thud, thud, thud was quickly audible on the battlefield as a Squalo rolled into view, and the whir of servos indicated the arrival of a large force of remotes.

Under command of a Securitate veteran, the Foreign Company deployed to delay. Wild Bill and two Kaplans would watch one flank and hope to poke an opening, with heavy close combat units in Valkyrie, Senor Massacre, and Uberfallkommando on the other side. Holding things together in the middle, the Bolt and her sniper rifle were supported by Laxmee, Avicenna, and some flash pulses to slow the PanOceanian advance.

Neoterran Deployment

The PanOceanian forces were allowed to have the first move. The battlefield was large, and the Foreign Company doesn't usually bring enough long range firepower to contend with a full PanO detachment. Best to let them spread themselves out a bit.

The wisdom of this approach was proved when the enemy Squalo advanced to inflict damage and was sent back reeling by a mere flash pulse from our Fugazi. They had spent attention trying to attack, only to be thrown back at no gain other than an unconscious journalist documenting our exploits. That was unfortunate, but bearable.

A Black Friar team advanced on one flank and fired rockets at our pupniks. A waste of time, but they weren't experienced in such matters. The pupniks easily avoided most of the rocket blasts and, despite being clustered closely enough to feel the heat of the incendiary rounds on their fur, only one pupnik fell to the ground despite all of the attention spent.

More concerning, on the other flank, a Peacemaker that was equipped with much heavier armor than normal popped over the top of a building, its auxbot firing a gout of flame at Wild Bill. Cursing, he ducked, but the Kaplans supporting him were less capable and one took a shotgun round to the chest and slumped, unconscious. Right next to a doctor, but attention may or may not be spared there. Bill needed it himself to deal with this remote.

On the other side of the field, Laxmee was able to use her advanced hacking device and place an expert White Noise zone to block line of fire for both the Black Friar and the Bolt. PanOceanian equipment was great, but sometimes that fancy equipment does more to hurt than help. Under cover of this zone, Senor Massacre used his breaker rifle to knock down the Black Friar and clear the way for the Chimera and her pupniks.

They rushed forward and took out the Fusilier supporting the now dead Black Friar. She tucked herself into a corner and left the pupniks to watch an alleyway that the enemy force may use to approach Laxmee's own squad. The more time that the enemy wasted shooting pupniks, the better. They were threatening enough to demand the attention, but not so threatening as to feel their loss overly much.

Senor Massacre Uses His... Rifle?

Unfortunately, people only remain stunned for so long, and the same was true of the PanO commander. The enemy TAG advanced again, this time easily disabling our Fugazi and putting a bullet into our Bolt sniper for good measure. But the Bolt did some damage first. He then looted a panoply and got some kind of tech that made the TAG immune to most special effects of weapons. Not okay. The TAG was damaged, but not destroyed, and set up to suppress the middle of the board. This would be tricky.

The Bolts did exactly what we hoped they would do, and spent all of their time frantically backpedaling away from pupniks and leaving the Chimera completely alone. Although no pupniks made it to a Bolt, unfortunately, a good waste of time for them was just what the doctor ordered. They holed up on the second story of a building and waited.

Bolts Take on the Pupniks

With the Bolts indisposed, the Chimera made a run directly for the enemy's resource base. She used her rifle (often forgotten) to knock down a Fugazi, then turned to her left and saw that the enemy had placed drop bears to guard their objective. That wouldn't do. Taking a deep breath, she ran and cartwheeled through them and came out the other side totally unscathed!

Feeling lucky, the Chimera ran directly at the enemy TAG from the back and attacked it with her bladed chain. The chain found a weak spot in the TAG's armor and she was able to remove the remote piloting module as it sagged to its knees. The TAG was down, and the Black Friar was down. The PanO forces were reeling.

But the Foreign Company uses Bolts themselves, and knows how durable they can be when these things happen. They weren't out of the game yet.

The enemy Bolt team convened for a quick huddle at street level, seemingly deciding what to do. They began to move towards Senor Massacre, but he threw some eclipse smoke at them and they changed their minds. Low on control, the enemy Bolt knocked our Bolt out for good. No more doppleganger tricks up our sleeve. Their engineer laid D-Charges on our AC2 and blew it up. Getting paid to win is good, and it was still possible, but it just got a lot harder.

Massacre Uses Eclipse
Bolt Sniper Mirror Match

With our payday slipping away, Valkyrie and Senor Massacre slipped away behind the Bolt team. with Massacre throwing Eclipse smoke behind him to make certain of their escape. One of the most dangerous hitters in the Sphere should be able to knock out a console, right? Valkyrie was confident as she ran towards the AC2.

Unfortunately, her confidence was poorly placed. Although she took a giant chunk out of the thing when she hit it with her first swing, the console had some odd defense system that caused her muscles to lock up when she drew back for a second. We weren't able to finish the job, and we were out of time. Seeing defeat for what it was, the Foreign Company laid down its arms. We had lost a journalist and a remote, but nothing else was lost from the theatre. Better to be ready to collect on a new mission sooner.

Discretion is the better part of valor.
