My force. The quality of the pic is really bad, but hopefully clear enough.

Monsters in the dark

Jack Hiller, a member of Clandestine Action Team of the Hexahedron, had done missions like this more times that he could remember. Infiltrate a secure facility, grab the data and get out without leaving a trace. Although that wasn't going to work this time. The RavenEye orbital was a warzone, hotly contested by the alien invaders of Combined Army. Between the alien circus freaks, trigger happy Nomads from Corregidor and technically inept Ariadnan ateks, RavenEye was far from an ideal mission venue. And that's why Hiller and his fellow Locust, Bill Kern, had landed this gig. This was some special hush-hush Hexahedron garbage. The main stars of this show were the elite Bolts, lead by the Ice Queen of Svalarheima herself, captain Sorensen. Hiller and Kern were here as her backup dancers. And that suited Hiller very well, let the Bolts do the heavy lifting for once.

My deployment left flank. Fugazi remote and most of the Bolt Core visible.
My deployment right. Both infiltrating Locusts visible, with a Mulebot EVO, a Warcor and the Haris with the Bulleteer as the leader.

I won the Initiative roll against WIP 17 so it had to be an Avatar. Something that this list just cannot handle at all. The only weapon that had decent change to hit and damage the TAG was the Bolt MSR with MSV1, a piece that has a lifespan of one order before it's dead. So this is going to be painful. Main attraction of the list was the full Core of Bolts, with Uma and a Machinist filling up the roster, supported by a Bolt Haris made up of Chain of Command Bolt, joined by two wildcards: a Black Friar and a Bulleteer. I placed the Core at the center of the deployment area and Haris took the right flank. Since I had to deploy my units first there was no change to counter-deploy the Black Friar against the Speculo, the main reason why I took him. But no plan survives contact with game table.

You can run, but you cannot hide from the Avatar

Voice of Bill Kern broke in: "I can see the console and the way seems to be clear. Moving in."
Hiller could see Kern's symbol move ahead on his battlefield overlay. He was close to the target console.

Kern spoke: "I can see something move further ahead. I can't get a clear lock on it. Let me see if I can getter a better look." A sound of an explosion then rang across the orbital. Kern's symbol disappeared from the overlay. He was gone.
"It's an Avatar!" captain Sorensen shouted over the comms. "Do not engage, we're not equipped to deal with that monster. Keep to the mission and avoid contact with the Avatar at all cost."

Hiller swore under his breath. The Avatar, that unstoppable metal monster would tear their lightly armed task force to shreds in no time. No time waste. The Haiduk still had him pinned down, something had gone wrong with the outflanking team. As he was weighting his options a new threat emerged. A repeater came flying through the air and landed right in front of him. No sooner than he had noticed the alien device a quantronic assault struck him with full force, cutting through his attempts to counter-hack. Only his quantronic protections saved him from bad case of brain damage. Unfortunately the Bolt hacker wasn't as lucky. A tinge of panic began to creep in. He had to move away from the repeater when he still could.

Hunting Haris going to outflank the Haiduk.
Bolt MSR shooting at the Q-Drone and Avatar. It survived the first order, a pleasant surprise.
Bolt Spitfire removes the Speculo after the team reformed without the now dead MSR Bolt.

After the first two rounds it was pretty clear that I couldn't deal with the Avatar or even defend my own servers. The Bolt core was down to three members, the Haris down to a Duo. The Black Friar that went against the Haiduk was half an inch too far and the range modifier went into negative three. So neither could do anything useful and a Taigha dodged closer so the BF couldn't shoot again without taking a template to the face. Bolt MSR was removed by the combined AROs from a Speculo and the Avatar. With several orders gone, no way to safely get to either console and even less change to reach the servers, there wasn't much I could do. I got lucky with the console and could choose the server that I wanted, putting it on the right side from my point of view. I placed Bulleteer and CoC Bolt into Suppressive Fire as to lock down that table edge a little.

You have one shot at this. So make it count.

Locust Hiller was running as fast as his feet could carry him. The target server was some distance away and he was the only one with any chance to destroy it, as he had all his D-Charges still in his pouch. So now he had to get to the server and blow it to pieces. As he rounded a corner he could see the Bulleteer remote and one Bolts firing their gun on full automatic towards some unseen foe. As he made his way closer the Bulleteer took several hits from high caliber rounds and it collapsed on the floor. Hiller ran past the Bolt and as he came into the open he could see the foe. The obscured outline of a massive Avatar was moving closer and firing it's massive machine gun. Hiller rolled and trusted his own optical disruption to throw off the monsters targeting. Bullets impacted the ground right where he had stood, but now their line of sight was obstructed by RavenEye's superstructure. And now he could see the server in front of him. Hiller ran forward and took one of his D-Charges. He had only one attempt at this. Jumping the last meters Hiller sailed into the firing line of several enemies. In the corner of his eye he saw a cloud of white matter flying towards him. No matter, he had reached the target. Slamming the charge home and pressing trigger with one fluid motion. As the cloud of adhesive covered him Hiller saw the controlled explosion tear a whole into server cluster, shattering electronics and circuit boards. Job done. The adhesive was hardening fast and Hiller was frozen in place. And the towering form of the Avatar kept approaching. With a flash of light a sudden pain struck Hiller in the head. He could feel the alien presence invading his mind, overwriting his personality as the Sepsitor invaded his Cube.

Bolt Spitfire finally removes the Haiduk, allowing the Machinist to operate the console.
Locust begins his long run to the server, going around the building to avoid the Avatar as much as possible.
And the final position of the Locust. Got to the server and barely managed to blow it up. And then the Locust took AROs from everything and got wiped out.

I could reach the correct server with a Locust and wreck it, but that was the extent of it. As it was getting late we chose not to play the final round. I was nowhere close getting my Classified and could not stop the CA from blowing up more servers. So we called the game at that point. Two for two defeats for this campaign.
